Provincial Spotlight on HPSD’s Indigenous Collaboration in School Nutrition

On Friday, May 2, at the 2025 FNMI Education Gathering hosted by the College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS) in Edmonton, three members of our team—Jamie Chalifoux, Connie Sabo, and Brennan McDonald—took the stage as keynote speakers.

Their presentation, “A Taste of Culture,” highlighted the powerful collaboration between our Indigenous Education Team and school hot lunch programs. By integrating Indigenous knowledge and traditional practices into school meals, students are given the opportunity to help prepare traditional food sources, such as bison, for school lunches. This hands-on approach not only provides nourishment but fosters cultural pride and connection to the land.

Their session drew a full room of engaged participants, many of whom stayed afterward to ask questions and learn more about how they might bring similar initiatives to their own divisions.

We’re proud to see our innovative approach to cultural education and student nutrition being recognized at the provincial level. Well done, team!
