Posted on 08/31/2021
The Board of Trustees met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. The Board approved the consent agenda and moved into the rest of the agenda items.

Trustees discussed the recently proclaimed federal holiday National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. HPSD administration met with local Indigenous leaders and coterminous school authorities to discuss what they were planning with regards to school operations. In keeping with the majority of those other partners, HPSD will continue to have September 30 as an operational and instructional day. HPSD schools recognize the important day with Orange Shirt Day activities hosted throughout the Division with support and guidance from the Division's Indigenous Education Team.

The Board discussed the upcoming ASBA Zone 1 Award Banquet in Peace River on September 22.

Safety Officer Kathleen Doucette presented the annual Occupational Health and Safety update.

Trustees approved a Joussard Early Learning proposal. The proposal is for a one-year pilot project running the playschool with the current available space in the school.

The Board asked administration for information on the upcoming municipal elections, specifically, the reason for no advanced polling and where the polling stations will be. Secretary Treasurer Jody Frowley reviewed the election agreements in place with partners in Ward 1 (Falher and Donnelly and area) and Ward 4 (Slave Lake and area). Ward 2 (High Prairie and area) and Ward 3 (Joussard, Faust, Kinuso and area) are being handled by High Prairie School Division for the county polling stations and in partnership with the Town of High Prairie for the in-town elections. HPSD is in talks with all partners regarding options for advanced polling in all wards.

Trustees carried a motion to purchase a division service agreement with the Alberta School Councils' Association. The division service package provides training for school councils on school council introduction, school council establishment, school council purpose, fundraising association partnership purpose, tools for effective school councils, the work of school council, school council – trustee relationship, operating procedures, policies and practices, effective engagement in your school community, creating school council plans, building positive partnerships, and managing school council meetings.

The Board received the finance report. They also discussed the update on government accounting procedures for funding adjustments.

The Advocacy Committee will be meeting to review the advocacy points prior to the September board meeting to approve as information for the incoming school board in October.
