The High Prairie School Division held its fourth annual handgames tournament on Thursday, April 21. We want to begin by thanking Knowledge Keeper Herman Sutherland and teacher Julia Sander for their drumming throughout the tournament, and for offering their guidance and patience to the players who were new to the game. Thank you to Indigenous Education Coach Jamie Chalifoux for assisting with drumming and organizing, Principal Spencer Smith for helping to organize, and teacher Brenda Coulombe, who has been a founding member of this tournament. This tournament would not have been possible without you all.

Nine schools participated in this year's tournament. As many group activities have been cancelled for the past two years, this year brought three brand new teams into the mix, who had no previous experience playing. These new teams started out being very quiet and showing little movement. However, the drummer (ref) and other teams were very patient and welcoming in supporting these new teams to gain confidence. As handgames is an inclusive game, it is most rewarding when everyone is playing at their best and having fun.

As shared by Brenda Coulombe, the highlight for her was seeing how by the end of the tournament, those teams who had started out so quiet and reserved were now hollering and distracting and incorporating all the new skills they had learned from the other teams.

This year's winner for the elementary category was École Routhier School, and the winner for the junior/ senior category was Prairie View Outreach School.

Thank you again to all who came together to make this event a success.
