Alberta’s annual Rural Education Symposium took place in Edmonton on March 5 to 7. It focused on the three R’s of rural education: Resilience, Reconciliation, and Rejoicing.
The High Prairie School Division was excited to be chosen to present our Indigenous Education program: Advancing Reconciliation by Honouring Culture, Identity, and Belonging through Holistic Education, as a success story.
Indigenous Education Coaches Connie Sabo and Corinne Goulet shared the High Prairie School Division’s journey from First Nations, Métis, Inuit (FNMI) Success Coaches to Universal Indigenous Education Coaches; the challenges and success stories. They spoke to grade-level curriculum resources, curriculum-connected land-based learning experiences, and the monthly professional development learning series for staff. All practices and approaches used in the program have been created to support Indigenous knowledge systems and how these ways of knowing and being create a richer learning experience for all students. Ongoing consultation with local Indigenous communities ensures that their voices are heard, honoured, and represented in the curriculum.
