The High Prairie School Division Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, June 20, for their regularly scheduled board meeting. With no additions to the agenda and approval of the consent agenda, the meeting proceeded through the remainder of the agenda items.

Trustees discussed the Joint Use Planning and Agreement (JUPA) Joint Use Agreements recently completed with The Town of Slave Lake and The Living Waters Catholic Separate School Division.

The Board reviewed two draft administrative procedures, Administrative Procedure 422 - Division Staff Code of Conduct and Administrative Procedure 512 - Expenditure of Division Funds. These draft procedures will now be presented to school administrators prior to being implemented.

Trustees then received questions from Trustee Hughes regarding enrollment and student transitions between schools and between school authorities.

Trustee Henkel provided an update on the Rural Caucus of Alberta School Boards (RCASB) general meeting. Trustee Henkel noted there were two common issues raised during the meeting: 1) accommodating the new transportation thresholds which will be mandatory in the 2024-25 school year, and 2) and challenges facing rural school boards from decisions made at the provincial level.

The following board policies received first, second, and third and final readings:

  • Board Policy 11 - Role of the Superintendent
  • Board Policy 12 - Appeals Regarding Student Matters
  • Board Policy 13 - Hearings on Teacher Transfers

These policies were reviewed and changes were discussed at the Board of Trustees annual strategic planning session.

Trustees approved the continued membership of the Board of Trustees in the Alberta School Councils' Association (ASCA) for the 2023-24 school year.

The Board approved the sale of unreserved property located at Lot 2 Block 8 Plan 8922041 in Kinuso, Alberta.

Trustees approved a change to the walk limits for students riding the school bus. Effective September 1, 2023, the walk limits for students riding High Prairie School Division buses will be 1.0 km for Kindergarten to Grade 6 and 2.0 kilometres for Grade 7 to 12. The Government of Alberta announced that these changes would be mandatory for all school authorities in the 2024-25 school year.

Trustees received and approved the Finance Report.

The meeting then returned to the closed portion of the agenda.
