High Prairie, Alberta – The Board of Trustees met for their regularly scheduled board meeting on Wednesday, May 15. Trustees began with a round of introductions for our new Ward 1trustee, Adrian Wong at which point he was then sworn in. Trustees then accepted the consent agenda and moved forward with the rest of the meeting.

The Board reviewed a letter from the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBA) regarding that association’s Together for Students campaign. Trustees acknowledged the letter and decided to refrain from moving forward on this campaign.

Trustees heard from the ad hoc Advocacy Committee regarding 2 recommendations from the committee members. A discussion followed which resulted in the Board amending the key priorities intended for discussion with our Cabinet Ministers and MLAs.

The Board reviewed the Alberta School Boards’ Association (ASBA) Zone 1 Friends of Education documentation. Trustees discussed potential candidates to nominate for the annual ceremony.

Trustees then discussed the Mandatory Entry-Level Training legislation as it relates to the Division.

The Board moved that Ward 1 Trustee Karin Scholl be appointed to the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA). They also reviewed and approved the Finance Report.

The HPSD Career Coaches were then received as a delegation. The Career Coaches provided an overview of their work with students including their work at the respective grade levels. The Career Coaches work with students from grade 5 to grade 12. From grades 5-9 they focus on having students self-reflect on their skills, strengths, and classroom lessons. The bulk of the Career Coaches work continues to be with students in senior high as they facilitate access to dual credit opportunities, scholarships and bursaries, and introduce students to a variety of career and post-secondary opportunities.

The Board then discussed a Big Lakes County and Town of High Prairie Inter-municipal Development Plan. The meeting moved into closed.
