High Prairie, Alberta – High Prairie Elementary School teacher Magalie Frechette has received the Pierre & Madeleine Monod Award. This award is presented in memory of doctors Pierre and& Madeleine Monod who worked tirelessly for the promotion of excellence in teaching and support of French as a Second Language in Alberta.
Dr Pierre Monod was a professor of French at the University of Alberta and
Dr Madeleine Monod was a professor of Education at the University of Alberta. They were responsible for initiating the summer program for teachers of French in Jonquière, Québec.
The award is presented to a member of the Second Languages and Intercultural Council whose work in education and promotion of French as a Second Language (FSL) in Alberta is exceptional.
Magalie has been an FSL teacher with High Prairie Elementary School for 20 years. Principal Kim Corless stated that “(students) leave this school confident in their ability to learn a second language. Our junior high French teacher often comments on how lucky she is to have Mme Frechette working with these children in their younger years because they come to junior high with very strong French skills and a love for it”.
